Champion Chooses Cheviot Family For "Ugliest Window" Prize
CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati area is full of ugly windows with problems including peeling paint, broken glass, and warped and cracked wood frames. As part of their Ugliest Windows Contest, www.ugliestwindowcontest.com, Champion received 444 entries and discovered that tri-state families' window problems go beyond the aesthetics. In fact, in nearly all cases, ugly windows mean energy-wasting windows.
One family described 80+-year-old wood windows that were starting to rot. Some of their single-pane glass windows could not be opened because of its broken rope and pulley system, and the windows were missing their screens. On windy winter nights, the windows would rattle and wake their baby. In addition to high energy bills, the old, ugly windows even presented security issues.
This description and photographs of windows from the Puryear family, of Cheviot, Ohio, earned them the grand prize for the contest - new Champion windows. Richard and Kim Puryear were surprised and delighted when they received the news that they had the "Ugliest Windows in Cincinnati" on Oct. 16. Rick, a Florence, Ky. firefighter, and Kim, a nursing student, and their 19-month-old son, will have eight new Champion windows installed before Thanksgiving, before the cold weather hits.
"It's wonderful because we won't have to worry about my son's windows. He'll be warmer at night and our heating bill will go down. With screens in the windows, we'll be able to open them in spring and summer and enjoy the weather instead of keeping them shut all the time," said Kim.
Champion wanted the contest to bring to light how installing ENERGY STAR®-rated windows with Champion's exclusive Comfort 365® Glass in a home can help homeowners save energy and lower their heating and cooling bills. In addition, Champion windows can qualify for the $1,500 Federal Tax credit.
"Selecting the winner was a very difficult decision for us. There are a lot of ugly windows in the Greater Cincinnati area. We had to consider where Champion windows would make a difference in people's homes and lives. The Puryears' story was very compelling. We are happy that through this contest we can increase their home's value and improve their energy savings," said Don Jones, President and COO of Champion.
